Bandshell Cafe

2021

This project combined the programs of a cafe, daycare, and a bandshell.

The building occupies the North end of Buffalo's historic Martin Luther King Jr. park, directly adjacent to the Buffalo Science Museum.

The north end of MLK park is often overlooked by the public, as are the steps leading up to the now defunct front entrance of the science museum. My goal was to activate this area by connecting it to the rest of the park and transform the area into a public gathering space.

A path divides the site into two sections: one which directly relates to the adjacent museum, and the other which directly relates to the park.

Sloping the path upwards opened up a void beneath to house the cafe and daycare, and created an external slope facing the park and bandshell to use as seating.
